Washington football player dies after injury

Kind of a sad note, and if you google Drew Swank or go to CNN's Web site, you will see some live video of an interview with the family.
Makes you realize how dangerous a sport football can be.
RIP, Mr. Swank.

  1. That's why it is imperative to teach kids how to tackle, how to block, when to hit and when not to hit.

  2. Good point David. How many times do you watch college and even professional players on TV, lowering their heads, and using them like battering rams to tackle? It makes me cringe. I'm not even 50 years old, but I was taught to use my shoulders to block with, and my arms to tackle. I've never had a head or neck injury playing sports. Hey coaches - remember Chuckie Mullins! Remember Mike Webster! Teach your players how to hit WITHOUT using their heads! This kind of tragedy could have been easily avoided, but the young man was probably taught to "put his helmet on the ball" from his first Pop Warner team on forward.

  3. Unfortunately, some times injuries cannot be prevented. Football is a violent sport and not even a doctor on the sideline would have been able to stop this. This is one of those injuries where the outcome, no matter what it was/is, is something that could not be stopped. I would not be surprised if the student had a concussion or symptoms of a concussion earlier in the week and did not report it.

Parents, please tell you kids if they experience any symptoms of a concussion they need to seek out the coach, athletic trainer or tell you so that they can get the proper medical care and so that they do not endanger themselves anymore! If parents have any questions about what is a concussion symptom please consult the CDC website at www.cdc.gov

that will give you a good idea of what concussions are, what the symptoms are and how to care and treat them.
