Santa Fe High softball

Who would have thought that the Demonettes of Santa Fe High would be pushing their baseball brethren to be the story of the spring in Northern New Mexico? At 10-1 - which equals the baseball team's record - they are making the push to be a player in District 2AAAAA and (dare I say it?) maybe even in the state.
At the Kristen Griego Tournament in Rio Rancho today, Santa Fe High beat Rio Rancho, which has been to the state tournament every year since the state went to five classes, and Aztec, which was two wins away in the double-elimination tournament from playing for the AAAA title last year.
The Demonettes move on to championship pool play, where they face another challenge in Farmington, a team that won three straight AAAA titles earlier this decade and has been one of the state's best programs regardless of class for years.
Game time is at 8 a.m.

Back from my quick slumber ...

While the basketball tournament was great, prep sports waits for no man, woman or event. So as the basketball season wound down, baseball began to heat up.
And guess what? The Santa Fe High Demons have the best record in Class AAAAA! Granted, they've played 11 games already - all within a 15-day period - but their only loss was to Albuquerque Academy in the Albuquerque St. Pius X Invitational.
Santa Fe High rebounded to take fifth place in the tournament, and won the Clovis Inviational in the first week of March. The Demons have two wins over a respected Rio Rancho program. They also have shown they can pound the ball, having scored double-digit runs in eight games already.
What should be a good omen is the pitching. Jerome Romero pitched a strong game against the Rams in the rematch (a complete-game four-hitter) and Richard Pacheco, who was solely a designated hitter last year, is 3-0 already.
It stands to reason that Santa Fe High will make another appearance in the state tournament in May, but how it fares in District 2AAAAA - which has been the toughest district in the state for the last few years - will determine how good the Demons really are.
