Mike Dominguez update

For those thirsting for a Mike Dominguez update, here it is.
Dominguez, a 2005 Capital High graduate, poured in 37 points and hit the game-winning jumper with :01 left on the clock to lift Mesa State College to an 81-79 win over New Mexico Highlands in his first game back in New Mexico since the 2005 Class AAAA state championship game.
Dominguez knocked down 13 of 21 shots, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range. He scored 23 points in the second half as he helped erased a Cowboys lead that was as much as 71-59 with 5:50 to go. Dominguez scored 10 points during that closing 22-8 run, including a layup to give Mesa State a 77-76 lead with 1:52 to go and then another jumper for 79-77 at :47.
The win keeps No. 17 Mesa State atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings at 8-0 and improved its overall mark to 14-1.

Guess who cracked the Top 10 in Class AA?

If you said, "Monte del Sol," you would be correct. And leave it to Monte del Sol head boys basketball coach Jonathan Haack to set me straight on the matter.
"It's the second time we've been ranked," Haack said, alluding to the team's appearance two weeks ago.
Amazing when you consider that the Dragons have nary a win over a Class AA opponent in their 5-11 mark. But Haack believes the ranking goes beyond the record his team has posted.
"I think this is good for them that people recognize their hard work," Haack added. "I mean, I don't keep a young team home that's in a rebuilding year. We take them on the road to the tough teams down south and the ones up here in the North.
"I'd like to think we're getting nods for our hard work, if not for our results."
The arts charter schools also seems to be a team favorite for other programs. While at Santa Rosa's Lion Classic, Monte del Sol could count on crowd support from Mesilla Valley and New Mexico Military Institute, which was refreshing for Haack to see.
"I think maybe we inspired the schools down there," Haack said. "First they might be thinking, 'Hey, they're taking a really young team.' They saw us going out there and playing as has as everybody else, and they realize that it's all basketball."

Other notes and observations from the recent coaches' poll.
- Capital and Los Alamos apparently have new coaches, according to the voting list. Gone is Ray Henderson with the Lady Jaguars. Enter "Raynee" Henderson. Lady Hilltoppers head coach "Taran" Logan superceded Tarah Logan as well. At least Los Alamos got something out of the new rankings - it moved up to No. 5 in the latest rankings. Capital tied with Aztec at No. 11 - four votes shy of the Top 10.
- Abby Letz, meet Abbie Letz. Now the question is which Letz gets credit for Albuquerque La Cueva's girls basketball wins and which one gets the losses?
- What happened to the lone brave soul who voted for Espanola No. in the boys poll? Apparently, even he has been converted to the Roswell Coyotes' camp. Now if the Coyotes could have pulled a certain 6-foot-11 post to go with that change of heart ...
